 “Meet the Ambassador of  Vietnam"  at the National Chamber

 

Vietnamese Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Her Excellency Phan Thi Ngoc  will be the Special Guest Speaker in  “Meet the Ambassador ” program  on “Bilateral Trade Between Sri Lanka  &  Vietnam ”  on Wednesday 26 September 2018  at the Chamber, from 3.00 p.m to 4.30 p.m, No 450 D R Wijewardene Mawatha Colombo 10. The participants will get an opportunity to have a close dialogue  with the Ambassador  and  other officials of the Vietnam Embassy and find out  information on trade matters and services available for Sri Lankans. 

Vietnam (formerly Saigon) capital is  Hanoi with a  population 92 million, is  famous for its national  leader Ho Chi Minh  and the business centre -  Ho Chi Minh City’. Vietnam is also  noted for its  underground tunnels used by Viet Cong Soldiers, during war and is a tourist attraction even today.

  • Vietnam is one of the biggest exporters’ of rice and other small grains to the world with comparatively cheap labour in the region. 
  • High investment inflow with latest modern technology and natural resources in the country give a strong impact to the emerging new scenario of Vietnam.
  • The total trade between Sri Lanka and Vietnam amounted to US$ 317.37 Mn in 2015 has increased to US $ 380.75 Mn. in 2017 reporting a 20 % increment.

Sri Lanka exports to Vietnam - Parts of footwear ,fish, Bran,  knitted crocheted fabrics, Tea, Compounded rubber Other knitted or crocheted fabrics

Sri Lanka imports from Vietnam- Telephone sets, Natural rubber, Portland cement, pepper, knitted or crocheted fabrics, Men's or boys' suits,    jackets, blazers, trousers.

Potential exports to Vietnam - textile materials , women garments, men/boys  trousers, Dyed cotton fabrics, knitted or crocheted,  petroleum or bituminous minerals, Food preparations , vulcanized rubber, pepper.

The New Inland Revenue Act  came into operation from 1st April  2018 where some  changes have been incorporated into the new Act  and the salient points would be discussed  at a full day seminar to be held   on Thursday 7 June 2018 from 9.00 a.m to 4.30 p.m at the National Chamber Auditorium,No. 450, D R Wijewardena Mawatha, Colombo 10.

The National Chamber Welcomes Economic Policy outline of the Government.

The National Chamber of Commerce of Sri Lanka welcomes Economic Policy outline given by the honorable Prime Minister in a special address at the Parliament  on 5th November 2015. The National Chamber appreciates the measures taken  by the government on sustainable economic policies which would be beneficial for the country. Even with unfavorable global economic conditions the   government’s determination in strengthening the local economic growth and stability is much appreciated by the National Chamber.

Promoting Innovation and productive growth, generating of one million job opportunities in the Private Sector, enhancing income levels, development of rural economy, ensuring land ownership to rural and estate sectors, the middle class and government employees creating a wide and a strong middle class, creating the background needed to enter the global value system are much appreciated.Encouraging small and medium and large scale farmers and entrepreneurs to participate in the global economy, encouraging competitive international organizations to invest in Sri Lanka, bring about the digitization of the economy and encouraging local investments are also commendable.

Further, policy directions on empowering citizens through construction of housing schemes for the middle class in urban and semi-urban areas by offering tax concessions to investors those who come forward to fund these ventures,the focus on State-Owned Enterprises and measures to be taken to review them would be much favorable for the Sri Lankan economy.

Ensuring transparency on all state purchases, working towardsrural economic development with setting up of large-scale agricultural enterprises where farmers can be members and setting up of agro marketing authority which leads to growth of agri exports of the country is also commendable.Use of new technology to maximize fishing capabilities will add much to the economy of the country.

Tea, rubber and paddy are considered to be criticalagri productsin our economy and the National Chamber welcomes quick measures to be taken to solve problems faced by these sectors,and  developingthese sectors will have greater positive  impact on our economy.

Further, the National Chamber hails measures taken on tourism development, skills development, FDI attraction, women empowerment, low tax regime, reducing budget deficit  to 3.5%, the super gain tax removal. It is with pride that National Chamber mentions that many of the proposals are much in line with the National Chamber macro policy framework published recently.

will grace the National Chamber on  ‘Meet the Minister’ program for an interactive session with the business community 

on Wednesday 30 March  2016, from 3.00 p.m to 4.30 p.m at the Chamber Auditorium No 450, D R  Wijewardene Mawatha, Colombo 10.

 

This  program was launched by the National Chamber with the intention of assisting the members and the business community to

get current information of the  business environment ,under the relevant Ministry  its future plans, present activities and other 

related issues pertaining  to their sectors. In this instance,  the present activities, developments and projects in the Telecom/ ICT sector,

facilitating trade and business sectors through ICT and other areas will be discussed.

 

This will be an opportunity for the business community  to have a close interaction with the Minister and find out more information

National Chamber  Holds a Session with  the  High Commissioner of South Africa

 A session on “Bilateral Trade between Sri Lanka &  South Africa ” with the High Commissioner of South Africa  H.E. G.Q.M Doidge  will be  held on  Friday 23 October  2015  from 3.00 to 4.30 p.m at the Chamber Auditorium No 450 D R Wijewardene Mw,Colombo -10.  The High Commissioner of South Africa will grace the occasion as the Special Guest Speaker. At this  session the  members will get an opportunity to discuss business related  issues and  any other  information with regard to business  and other services available in South Africa. 

South Africa is a middle-income, emerging market with an abundant supply of natural resources; well-developed financial, legal, communications, energy, and transport sectors, and a stock exchange that is Africa’s largest and among the top 20 in the world !  South Africa is often called the 'Rainbow Nation', a term  given by the former Archbishop, Desmond Tutu, which describes the country's multicultural diversity , one nation made up of different  people, with 11 different official languages.

Exports from Sri Lanka to South Africa has increased to 33.16 US $ Mn in 2014.  Tea, Retreated or used pneumatic tyres of rubber , Apparel, Natural rubber, New pneumatic tyres, of rubber,  Raw bristle fibre of coconut (coir) .Potential Export products to South Africa includesSemi precious Jewellery, Pearls, semi precious stones, Surgical gloves , footwear.
